  • Check for road conditions before your trip - Current traffic conditions can be accessed through a variety of resources. Arizona-based residents can dial 511 and out-of-state drivers can dial 1-888-411-ROAD(7623) for current traffic conditions from the state’s travel information alerting system. Updates about road conditions can also be reached at www.az511.gov.
  • Prepare for your trip with road essentials - Pack an emergency kit for the road, including water bottles, snacks, blankets, a portable phone charger, prescriptions, a flashlight, food and necessary items for infants, etc.
  • Ensure your vehicle is ready for the drive - Check for satisfactory functioning of fluid levels, wiper blades, and tire pressure.
  • Allow ample space for passing snow plows - It’s recommended to situate your vehicle at a minimum of four car lengths behind a snow plow and avoid passing the snow plow. 
  • Reduce the speed of your vehicle in slippery surroundings - If you’re driving in rainy or snowy conditions, don’t accelerate rapidly or use the brake suddenly.

1. Are Chains Required in Flagstaff?

Four-wheel drives, all-wheel drives, and chains are helpful and may be required for driving during a snowstorm. Arizona Snowbowl may require each vehicle to have four-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or chains when traversing toward the resort during snowy and icy conditions.

2. Is There a Lot of Snow in Flagstaff?

The warmer months tend to bring plenty of sunshine while the colder temperatures bring an annual average of 100 inches of snow in downtown Flagstaff. Snow in Flagstaff typically arrives in the later half of November and can linger along the San Francisco Peaks until the early summer months. 

3. Do I Need Snow Tires for Flagstaff?

Tires that are geared for the winter months offer improved traction on snowy and icy roads when compared to standard tires. The use of tires and/or chains designed to navigate road conditions are safety measures.
